As railways have been abandoned, there has been an effort to convert these paths for public use, removing the rails and sometimes even paving over the top.
Rail beds make ideal trails because they are relatively flat (generally less than a 2% grade) with smooth curves and a wide berth. They can accommodate walkers, cyclists, equestrians, cross-country skiers, and skaters (if paved). Many are even wheelchair-accessible. As such, they provide broad access for the masses, to remote places and extraordinary landscapes.
